PARENTS WITH BABIES STAYING AT THE CANBERRA HOSPITAL’S NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT (NICU) ARE NOW ABLE TO MONITOR THEM FROM HOME VIA A WEBCAM.

Health Minister Katy Gallagher says parents are not always able to visit their sick babies in the hospital, particularly if they live in regional New South Wales.

She says the new webcam service will help parents to bond with their children.

“What we’re saying is if those parents can’t be around or families and friends can’t get into the NICU then this is another way of seeing that baby, of that baby being real and also seeing those baby changes,” she said.

“Some of these babies will spend four months in the NICU, that’s a long time and those babies will change enormously.

“With a password and in a secure environment they’ll be able to go and have a look. So I think from a bonding point of view there’s a lot of potential here.”
