Thank you to all who voted for me to be a Westfield Local Hero.
Your vote has enabled us to fund a special cooling blanket to treat newborn babies who are having trouble breathing. Babies who do not cry and breathe at birth, may develop a condition called as Hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy or HIE. HIE means brain injury because of lack of oxygen from lack of blood flow to the brain. Research has shown that cooling babies a few degrees below their normal body temperature (33.5-34.5 degree Celsius) soon after birth decreases brain injury. A cooling blanket is a device used to cool babies with HIE in a very effective and safe manner.
This award comes with a $10,000 grant that has made up a large proportion of the $39,000 required to purchase the blanket. Thank you Westfield.
The balance was raised through our Bake for Babies 2021 fundraising. Thanks to Tina Martinovic, Bake for Babies Coordinator, for her amazing efforts during a difficult year.
